TRM Testimonials
TRM completed a two year $1.8MM project to upgrade fire protection systems at Westar Energy, Jeffery Energy Center (JEC), St. Mary’s, Kansas. JEC is a three unit, 2400 MW, coal fired power plant. JEC burns 100% Powder River Basin Coal.
TRM was contracted to upgrade both the alarm and detection system and the water based releasing valves. TRM designed, engineered, procured, installed and commissioned a completely new, campus wide fire alarm and detection system covering the coal handling areas of the plant. Per the plant’s request, TRM provided a Protectowire based alarm and detection system. All fire alarm panels are networked and discrete outputs of each trouble and alarm condition are based to the plant DCS. The fire alarm panels utilize touch screen HMI technology. Protectowire, a linear heat detection device, was employed along all coal conveyors. TRM replaced over 30 fire protection valves servicing the coal handling system. In addition to valve replacements, TRM installed HCT F-500 fire fighting agent education and bladder tank agent storage.
This project was completed during with the plant and coal handling system on line at all times. TRM worked closely with the fuels management team to schedule and complete work. TRM also worked closely with plant engineering, providing guidance on valve house design and construction. TRM transitioned the plant for a 1980’s vintage alarm and detection system to a state of the art system with no downtime impact to the plant’s production schedule. Cut overs to the new panels occurred without incident due to proper planning and communication between JEC and TRM.
The equipment installed and the workmanship were first class. We have been left with modern system which provides us with the safety and security for the Fuel Handling Systems we were seeking.

With OSHA driving their National Emphasis Program across the Power Industry, the City of Ames Power Plant felt as though it was critical to stay ahead of the curve and become an industry leader in addressing the combustible dust issue. Technical Risk Management (TRM) provided a unique & cost effective solution to this issue. TRM came to our plant and cleaned the plant’s tripper room which includes all ceiling walls/beams/handrails along with the plant’s burner front. As a result, this procedure and service dramatically reduced our risk exposure. TRM performed what they call a Dry Foam Clean solution which worked perfectly in addressing our combustible dust issue. TRM staff were very knowledgeable of the operational conditions we had and were very flexible in working around the conditions and time constraints we set. We would highly recommend them and look forward to working with them in the very near future.
